After leaving school in the tenth grade, Sean Guptill returned to education and earned Toronto Metropolitan University's highest academic honour. He joins six other inspiring changemakers recognized for turning personal challenges into meaningful community solutions.

Sean Guptill once walked away from high school in the tenth grade, wondering if the classroom held any future for him at all. Today, he holds Toronto Metropolitan University's highest academic honour, proving that life's detours can become our greatest strengths.

Guptill received the prestigious Gold Medal this fall after completing his Master of Arts in Child and Youth Care. Instead of letting his early struggles hold him back, he channeled his lived experiences into powerful advocacy for vulnerable young people.

During his graduate studies, Guptill contributed to the Indigenous Youth Justice Project and earned the Dean's Graduate Essay Award for research on youth empowerment. He also launched Got Your Back, an innovative day program designed to support young adults living with developmental disabilities.

Guptill shared the convocation spotlight with six other exceptional graduates recognized for turning scholarship into direct community action. Among them, Master of Public Policy graduate Michelle Jadormeo received both the Gold Medal and the Board of Governors Student Leadership Award.

Jadormeo researched the impact of artificial intelligence data centres on freshwater resources while volunteering at a local hospice. She also founded Beyond Tomorrow Impact, an initiative that connects passionate young people directly with leaders across government and technology.

Fellow recipient Luella Glaiza Baccay Marcos earned her doctoral degree in electrical and computer engineering while mentoring more than 300 undergraduate students. Marcos now develops cutting-edge artificial intelligence models at UT Southwestern Medical Center to advance early medical imaging detection.
