Seattle Women Build 50+ Homes for Families in Need
Hundreds of women across Seattle are picking up hammers and power tools to build affordable homes for families who need them most. From May 2 to 16, volunteers with zero construction experience are welcome to join the effort that's changing lives one wall at a time.

Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King & Kittitas Counties is hosting its annual Women Build, a two-week program where local women come together to construct affordable housing. This year's projects are happening at Cloverdale and Yarrow Townhomes, where volunteers will work side by side to frame walls, install windows, and help families achieve homeownership.
Linda Hoffner, this year's Women Build Ambassador, says the program welcomes everyone regardless of skill level. Organizers provide training and tools, so first-timers can learn carpentry while making a real difference in their community.
The impact goes far beyond construction. These homes provide families with stable, safe housing that becomes the foundation for long-term success. For children, it means a consistent place to study and grow. For parents, it means predictable housing costs and the chance to build equity.

The Ripple Effect
Sixty percent of Habitat homeowners are women who are the primary breadwinners for their families. These mothers gain not just a house, but also financial literacy education and homeownership skills that set them up for lasting stability.
The program helps volunteers develop new skills while strengthening neighborhoods across King and Kittitas counties. Women who participate often describe it as one of the most empowering experiences of their lives, proving that building community happens both literally and figuratively.
Those who miss the May session can still get involved. Habitat offers year-round volunteer opportunities at their retail stores and construction sites throughout the region. Another Women Build session is scheduled for September 9 through 19, with registration opening soon.
The organization is also celebrating 40 years of impact at their Beyond the Build Luncheon on May 27. Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Mike Macdonald will speak about leadership and community building. Last year, the event raised over $2.7 million to support affordable housing efforts.
Every hammer swing brings a family closer to the American dream of homeownership.
