Self-Deploying Snow Tire Studs Launch This Year
Finnish tire maker Nokian created winter tires with studs that automatically extend in cold weather and retract when it's warm. The James Bond-inspired technology eliminates the need to swap tires twice a year.
Winter driving just got easier thanks to a tire that knows when to bring out its claws.
Finnish tire manufacturer Nokian spent 12 years developing the Hakkapeliitta 01, a winter tire with metal studs that automatically deploy when temperatures drop. The studs retract into the tire when the weather warms up, solving a problem that's frustrated drivers for decades.
The innovation works through layers of temperature-sensitive material built into the tire. When it gets cold, the material stiffens and pushes the metal studs outward for better grip on ice and snow. As temperatures rise, the material softens and the studs sink back below the tire's surface.
Studded tires have always been a double-edged sword for drivers in cold climates. They provide excellent traction on ice and snow, but they create a noisy, bumpy ride on dry pavement and can damage roads. Most people either commit to studded tires all winter or avoid them entirely, swapping between summer and winter tires as seasons change.

The new tires debut later this year in North America and Europe, with various sizes available. Nokian is focusing initial sales on Nordic countries where winter driving conditions are most challenging.
The Bright Side
The technology delivers real improvements beyond convenience. Compared to Nokian's traditional studded Hakkapeliitta 10 tires, the new model reduces road wear by up to 30 percent while improving ice grip by up to 10 percent.
The system isn't flawless. The studs deploy based purely on temperature, so they might extend during a cold morning even when roads are dry. But for drivers who face unpredictable winter conditions, having automatic protection beats guessing wrong about road conditions.
The idea came straight from a 1987 James Bond film where 007 pressed a dashboard button to activate tire studs while driving across a frozen lake. Nokian (which split from Nokia phones in 1988) turned the movie gadget into reality without requiring any dashboard buttons or driver input.
For millions of people who dread the annual tire swap ritual or worry about being caught unprepared when the first snow hits, this feels like the winter driving upgrade we've been waiting for.
