Singapore AI Startups Turn Safety Cameras Into Smart Guardians

What if your workplace camera could tell you're about to get hurt before the accident happens?

That's exactly what Singapore startup Invigilo AI is doing at construction sites and industrial facilities around the world. Founded in 2021, the company turns regular security cameras into AI-powered safety guardians that spot dangerous behavior and risky conditions in real time.

The results speak for themselves. One Housing Board construction project saw safety incidents plummet by 60% within 12 months of installing the system on just 30 existing cameras.

Co-founders Vishnu Saran and Anand Kumar built their platform using deep learning technology that gets smarter over time. Unlike old motion detection systems that only catch what they're programmed to see, their AI actually understands different work environments and learns to predict potential accidents.

The system watches for unsafe acts across oil rigs, construction zones, and industrial plants. When it spots a worker without proper gear or a risky situation developing, it alerts supervisors through a web dashboard before anyone gets hurt.

But Invigilo does more than just prevent accidents. The AI breaks down video footage of construction operations into step-by-step procedures, showing companies where trucks should deliver materials, how storage could be optimized, and where processes can speed up. That means safer sites and lower costs.

Training the AI takes patience. Each work environment has different safety requirements. An offshore oil platform looks nothing like a downtown construction site. The team installs cameras, teaches the system what to watch for, and lets the AI learn from thousands of scenarios.

The Ripple Effect

Invigilo represents something bigger happening across Singapore's tech scene. The country is proving that AI innovation doesn't belong only to tech giants with billion-dollar budgets anymore.

JTC Corporation's LaunchPad at One-North has grown from one building in 2015 to seven today, housing over 2,400 startups including three unicorns. A new test bed launching in Punggol Digital District in 2026 will let even more companies continuously test and refine their AI systems.

"Startups are really the canary in the coal mine," said Juliana Lim, who oversees JTC's startup initiatives. These nimble companies spot opportunities that large corporations miss, then turn unpredictable AI into practical tools that businesses actually want to buy.

The timing matters. The World Economic Forum estimates AI could add $15.7 trillion to global GDP by 2030. Goldman Sachs projects productivity growth could jump 1.5 percentage points over the next decade.

With about 200 active sites now using Invigilo's systems, Saran sees endless room to grow. "You must take companies along with you on the journey of technology," he said. "Whatever you have made will be constantly improving as the AI technology improves."

Workers heading home safe at the end of every shift is progress worth celebrating.
