Singapore and China Partner on Climate, AI, Aging Solutions

Singapore and China are expanding their partnership to address three global challenges that affect billions: climate change, technological advancement, and aging populations.

Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat announced the deepened cooperation at the Lianhe Zaobao Singapore-China Forum on July 6. He emphasized that no single country can solve these massive challenges alone.

The collaboration focuses on three key areas where both nations can learn from each other and create solutions together. On climate action, China leads the world in renewable energy technologies like solar panels, wind turbines, and battery storage systems, while Singapore brings expertise in sustainable urban planning and integrated development.

China's capabilities could help strengthen energy resilience across the region through initiatives like the Asean Power Grid. Singapore's experience in building green cities offers a practical model for sustainable development that other nations can adopt.

In artificial intelligence and robotics, the partnership aims to use technology to create jobs rather than just replace them. Singapore's construction industry already uses AI and robotics to boost productivity and free workers for higher-value roles, while China has deployed these technologies at massive scale across construction, logistics, and infrastructure.

Both countries also face rapidly aging populations. By 2030, one in four Singaporeans and one in five Chinese citizens will be 65 or older, placing both nations in the super-aged category.

Singapore focuses on helping seniors age at home through housing upgrades and community care programs. China is expanding mutual-aid eldercare, where younger seniors support older ones, creating a model that combines traditional values with modern needs.
