Singapore Gets 480 kW Charger: 200km Range in 5 Minutes
Singapore just unveiled its fastest electric vehicle charger yet, adding 200 kilometers of range in just five minutes. The game-changing technology uses battery storage to deliver ultra-fast charging without straining the power grid.
Imagine charging your electric car as fast as filling a gas tank.
That's now possible in Singapore, where SP Group and Huawei just launched the island nation's fastest EV charger at Temasek Polytechnic. The 480-kilowatt charger can add 200 kilometers of range in just five minutes for compatible vehicles, slashing charging time from hours to minutes.
The secret? A smart battery storage system that changes how fast charging works.
The system stores electricity when nobody's charging, then releases that power when drivers plug in. This means drivers get ultra-fast charging speeds even in areas where the electrical grid wasn't built to handle that much power at once.
"This site is a game-changer," said Maxi Wang, CEO of Huawei International. "It demonstrates that we are prepared to scale up ultra-fast deployments across the island to meet Singapore's surging demand for EVs."
The technology solves two problems at once. First, it lets cities install super-fast chargers without expensive infrastructure upgrades. Second, it reduces stress on the power grid during peak hours by drawing electricity gradually throughout the day.
To put the speed in perspective, typical fast chargers operate at 60 to 120 kilowatts. Regular home chargers max out at 22 kilowatts or less. This new charger is four times faster than existing fast chargers.
The chargers use liquid cooling technology in both the cable and unit to manage the intense heat generated by ultra-fast charging. Heat has been one of the biggest technical hurdles for rapid EV charging, and this cooling system helps overcome that barrier.
The Ripple Effect
Singapore's EV adoption is surging. Electric vehicles made up 45% of new car registrations in 2025, a record high. With Chinese brand BYD capturing over 20% of market share, the tiny nation has become Southeast Asia's top EV market.
This charging breakthrough could accelerate that momentum even further. The companies plan to deploy more ultra-fast chargers across Singapore following a partnership agreement signed in July 2025. The technology will allow them to install advanced chargers in urban locations without requiring massive electrical infrastructure overhauls.
Best of all, charging at the new site costs the same as SP's existing fast chargers. Drivers get dramatically faster charging without paying premium prices.
Dean Cher, managing director of SP Mobility, says the new chargers reflect the company's commitment to building a "high-performance, reliable and future-ready charging network." As more chargers come online, range anxiety becomes less of an obstacle for potential EV buyers.
Fast charging that actually feels fast brings electric vehicles one step closer to matching the convenience of gas-powered cars.
