Singapore Launches AI Driving Circuit for Learners in 2028

Learning to drive in Singapore is about to get smarter, more flexible, and accessible to more people than ever before.

Starting in 2028, the Singapore Safety Driving Centre will launch its Intelligent Driving Circuit, an AI-powered system that lets learner drivers practice without a human instructor in the car. Cameras and sensors monitor every movement, from steering adjustments to speed control, while remote administrators stand ready to stop vehicles if needed.

The technology uses image-recognition AI to analyze video footage in real time, evaluating vehicle status, driver behavior, and the surrounding environment. Developed by Honda, the system detects even subtle shifts in driving technique, offering objective feedback that helps learners improve faster.

The innovation solves a real problem: limited training capacity. By reducing dependence on instructor availability, the circuit can operate beyond current hours, giving learners more scheduling options and helping driving centers accommodate more students.

Both SSDC and the new Choa Chu Kang driving center opening by 2030 will use the technology for cars, motorcycles, and heavy vehicles. Human examiners will still conduct on-road tests, ensuring safety standards remain high while circuit-based training becomes more efficient.

The journey to launch wasn't smooth. Originally announced in 2017 with a 2023 target, COVID-19 delays pushed trials from 2021 to 2023. Motorcycle trials in 2024 revealed the system struggled to assess certain behaviors like blind-spot checks and proper riding posture, prompting further refinement.
