Singapore Philanthropist Gives $15M for Tech Scholarships

A retired finance executive is investing millions in the leaders who will shape tomorrow's tech-driven world.

Dr. Lillyn Teh has contributed $15 million to Singapore Management University to establish scholarships for students pursuing careers that blend technology and business skills. The gift creates SMU's highest merit scholarship for graduate students and expands support for undergraduates.

Starting this year, the scholarships will support 12 students annually in perpetuity. That means generations of future founders, innovators, and tech leaders will get the education they need without financial barriers holding them back.

Dr. Teh knows both worlds intimately. With degrees in finance and computer science, she taught at two American universities before managing one of the largest US pension funds. Now retired, she's channeling her success into opening doors for others.

"Business leaders must understand not just markets and strategy, but also the technologies that drive innovation," Dr. Teh said. "The future will belong to those who can bridge both worlds."

The impact is already visible. Lee Lin Wang, a second-year information systems student, used his scholarship to pursue prestigious internships and compete in international business competitions. Yeow Xuen Lynn focused on excelling in her studies while volunteering and leading analytics clubs.

Beyond tuition coverage, scholarship recipients join a community that spans undergraduate and graduate programs. They gain mentorship opportunities and interdisciplinary collaboration that prepares them for real-world challenges.
