Singapore Training 40,000 Tech Workers in AI by 2029

Singapore just launched one of the world's most ambitious plans to prepare its tech workforce for an AI-powered future. By 2029, 40,000 software developers, cybersecurity experts, and IT students will learn to work alongside AI tools that can write code, debug programs, and build systems that solve complex problems on their own.

The program, called AIxTech, kicked off this month as part of Singapore's National AI Impact Programme. It's designed to transform how tech professionals work, teaching them to use cutting-edge AI coding tools like GitHub Copilot, OpenAI's Codex, and Google's Gemini.

Participants will master practical skills like automating routine coding tasks, managing data that feeds AI systems, and building "agentic systems" that can handle complicated work without constant human supervision. The training includes 18 hours of online modules that professionals can complete at their own pace, followed by hands-on sessions solving real business problems.

The program costs companies just $180 per worker, and final-year students can join for free. More than 30 major organizations, including ST Engineering, OCBC Bank, and Standard Chartered, have already signed up to train their teams.

Senior Minister of State Tan Kiat How explained why this matters now. As AI tools become powerful enough to generate code and design systems in minutes, companies need to focus on what humans do best: providing accountability, trust, and security that clients can rely on.

The traditional model of charging clients for engineers' billable hours faces pressure when AI can complete the same work faster. But companies that use AI to enhance their teams rather than simply cut costs will gain a competitive edge.

The Ripple Effect

Singapore's tech workforce has grown from 173,000 professionals a decade ago to 222,000 today. The fastest-growing roles didn't even exist as distinct careers ten years ago: AI specialists, data analysts, and cybersecurity experts.

This training initiative sits within an even larger vision. Singapore plans to develop 100,000 "AI-bilingual" workers across professions like accounting, law, and nursing, creating a workforce that speaks both their traditional specialty and the language of artificial intelligence.

Smaller companies stand to gain the most. AI tools now let tiny teams tackle projects that once required large firms with dozens of employees. Some entrepreneurs already run "one-person companies" powered by AI agents that handle marketing, development, and financial tasks.

Minister Tan emphasized that waiting isn't an option. Companies experimenting with AI today, learning from failures and building expertise, will find themselves far ahead of those watching from the sidelines.

Singapore is betting that staying competitive means moving faster than technology changes, not just keeping up with it.
