Skier Lauren Macuga Eyes 2030 Olympics After ACL Injury
Park City skier Lauren Macuga is turning a devastating Olympic dream into fuel for her next goal. Nine months after ACL surgery ended her 2026 Games bid, she's planning her comeback for 2030.
When Lauren Macuga tore her ACL the day before her Olympic qualifying run last November, she lost more than her chance to compete. The Park City skier was ranked 4th in the world for downhill and 6th for super-G, poised for a medal run that suddenly vanished.
Two knee surgeries followed, forcing the athlete to sit out the entire winter season. The first three months of rehab were especially brutal as her knee refused to heal properly, leaving Macuga unable to do much of anything.
But nine months later, the world-class skier says the forced pause gave her something unexpected: time to heal properly and perspective she wouldn't have gained otherwise. Her knee now feels almost normal as she moves through her recovery exercises.
"It's incredible what you learn through it," Macuga told KPCW's Local News Hour in September. She acknowledged the terrible timing but said the experience is already making her stronger as an athlete.

The setback hasn't dimmed her Olympic ambitions. Macuga is now setting her sights on the 2030 Winter Games in the French Alps, giving herself four years to rebuild and refocus.
Why This Inspires
Sometimes the detours become the journey. Macuga's injury could have ended her career or crushed her spirit, but instead she's channeling disappointment into determination.
The extra four years between Olympic cycles gives her time most athletes never get: a chance to heal completely, refine her technique, and arrive at the starting gate stronger than before. She's also expanding her goals beyond downhill, hoping to podium at world championships and compete in giant slalom.
Her optimism isn't just talk. Macuga hopes to return to competition at the Beaver Creek World Cup this December, less than a year after surgery.
For young athletes watching their own dreams get derailed by injury or circumstance, Macuga's comeback offers a powerful reminder that one setback doesn't write your whole story.
