Smart Thread Monitors Health Without Feeling Like Tech

Professors at Tufts University just made that possible. They've developed electronic threads that can track your heart rate, breathing, and other vital signs while being thinner and more flexible than anything currently on the market.

Professor Sameer Sonkusale and his team created what they call "thread-ectronics." These tiny integrated circuits contain sensors and transistors built right into flexible threads. They can coil, stretch, and bend without breaking.

The threads work by using gold-coated filaments and special flexible transistors. When attached to your temple, they can detect blinking. On your chest, they track breathing patterns. The signals they pick up can indicate stress, illness, or changes in your health.

Unlike rigid monitors that require you to move carefully, these threads move with your body. You can sew them into workout clothes, work uniforms, or any fabric. You can even attach them directly to your skin.

This technology opens doors for people who've avoided health monitoring due to embarrassment or discomfort. Parents could monitor infant breathing without bulky equipment. Doctors could track elderly patients' fall risk without making them wear obvious devices. Athletes could optimize performance without restrictive gear.

The threads might even work as medical sutures that monitor healing processes inside the body. They're stable enough to touch skin, and if they break, low heat can repair them.

Manufacturing doesn't require expensive clean rooms or complex processes. The team uses textile-friendly materials and soft polymers, which means future production should stay affordable.

Wenxin Zeng, the lead researcher and PhD candidate, acknowledges the technology is still early. The team plans to improve speed, precision, and complexity. But the foundation is solid.
