Snapchat CEO Erases $550M Medical Debt for 261K Californians
Evan Spiegel and Miranda Kerr just wiped out half a billion dollars in medical debt for over 260,000 California families. Thanks to a nonprofit that buys debt for pennies on the dollar, recipients will open letters this July telling them their medical bills are completely forgiven.
Imagine opening your mail to discover thousands of dollars in medical debt has simply vanished.
That's about to happen for 261,000 California families, thanks to Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel and his wife, model Miranda Kerr. The couple partnered with nonprofit Undue Medical Debt to erase $550 million in healthcare bills that have been crushing families across the state.
The secret to their impact lies in how medical debt works. Undue Medical Debt buys debt in bulk from hospitals and collection agencies for pennies on the dollar. For every $10 donated, the organization can wipe out $1,000 in medical bills.
Recipients don't have to apply or qualify. Letters will start arriving in mid-July, and the debt simply disappears. "One of the reasons we wanted to share this directly is because if you happen to receive a letter in the mail saying your medical debt has been forgiven, we want you to know it's real," Kerr explained in a video announcement.
Medical debt has become the leading cause of bankruptcy in America, affecting one in four adults. The stress of unpaid bills can haunt families for years, turning moments that should focus on healing into financial nightmares.

Brooklyn, a single mom from Woodland, California, knows that feeling intimately. After a traumatic car accident during a medical crisis in 2018, she faced a $4,600 ambulance bill while trying to rebuild her life and raise her daughter. "When I opened the letter from Undue Medical Debt, I cried," she said. "Not just because the money was erased, but because someone out there believed I deserved a second chance."
The top counties benefiting include San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Families across these areas will soon experience the same relief Brooklyn felt.
The Ripple Effect
This partnership represents just a fraction of what's possible when people rally around medical debt relief. Undue Medical Debt has now erased over $40 billion in debt across all 50 states, and not just through billionaire donations.
In 2023, thousands of strangers raised over $1 million to honor Casey McIntyre, whose dying wish was to help others escape medical debt. Instagram educator Sharon McMahon and her followers raised another million. Churches, communities, and even party-goers at New York's annual "Debt Gala" have joined the cause.
"We wanted to shine a light on the incredible work Undue Medical Debt is doing because so many people have never actually heard of them," Kerr said. The organization's president, Allison Sesso, called the gift "truly astonishing" and emphasized that no family should have to choose between insulin and groceries.
For the quarter million California families opening those letters this summer, the message will be clear: your fresh start begins now.
