Solar Now Cheaper Than Fossil Fuels in 74 Nations

Solar panels just became the most economical choice for electricity in 74 countries that have long struggled with energy access and high fuel costs.

A new analysis from energy firm Ember reveals that solar power has crossed a historic threshold. The upfront cost of installing solar is now lower than building new coal or gas plants in nations belonging to the Climate Vulnerable Forum, representing more than 1.5 billion people.

This marks a complete reversal from just a few years ago when high installation costs kept solar out of reach for cash-strapped countries. Today, solar offers these nations a path to energy independence without the volatile pricing and supply chains that fossil fuels demand.

The timing couldn't be better. While global fuel prices have climbed, solar technology has gotten cheaper and more accessible. Half of the CVF countries have already surpassed the United States in solar adoption when measured against their electricity needs.

The shift opens doors for American solar manufacturers too. Data shows that 8 out of 10 CVF countries have imported at least three times more solar equipment than their current installed capacity suggests they need, signaling massive growth ahead.

Back home, solar momentum continues despite federal policy headwinds. Aligned Climate Capital just announced the first close of a $500 million fund dedicated to distributed solar and storage projects across the country.

The fund, called ASP7, will acquire construction-ready solar projects and finance their buildout, with a pipeline already exceeding 500 megawatts. These aren't massive solar farms but community-scale projects that directly reduce local electricity bills while strengthening grid reliability.

The Ripple Effect

This solar cost breakthrough creates a domino effect of positive change. Developing nations gain energy security and can redirect money spent on fuel imports toward healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Communities with distributed solar see lower power bills and more resilient grids during storms or outages.

The investment also comes from an unexpected place. The Bush Foundation, started in 1953 by Minnesota businessman Archie Bush and funded through his 3M stock, has backed Aligned's solar strategy as part of its commitment to meaningful climate solutions.

Since 2018, Aligned has already completed 56 solar projects across 10 states, proving that local solar works at scale. The new fund will expand that success story while creating jobs in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.

For countries that have waited decades for reliable electricity, solar represents more than clean energy. It's economic freedom, stable power for schools and hospitals, and the ability to build prosperity on their own terms without depending on foreign fuel supplies.
