Solar Panels Cool Homes 2.7°C and Boost Property Values
Rooftop solar panels do more than slash energy bills. New research shows they naturally cool homes by nearly 3 degrees Celsius during scorching summers while increasing property values by up to 2%.
Solar panels are revealing surprising superpowers beyond just generating clean electricity for European homes.
Scientists at UCL and the University of Exeter discovered that rooftop solar panels create a natural cooling effect by absorbing UV radiation before it heats your roof. The glass in solar panels also reflects sunlight away from your home, keeping indoor temperatures comfortable during heat waves.
Research measuring London's scorching 2018 summer found that widespread solar panel installation would have cooled the city by 0.3°C. That temperature drop could have prevented 96 heat-related deaths during those brutal months, representing 12% of the summer's heat fatalities.
A separate study from the University of California San Diego measured the cooling effect more precisely. Building ceilings stayed 2.78°C cooler during daytime under solar-paneled roofs compared to bare rooftops.
The cooling works both ways too. At night, the panels help trap warm air, reducing winter heating costs for homeowners.

During last June's heatwave, Britain's 1.9 million homes with rooftop solar generated enough electricity to power air conditioning units for five hours daily. That's 10 million solar-powered cooling hours each day without burning fossil fuels or straining the electrical grid.
The Ripple Effect
The mental health benefits extend beyond comfortable temperatures and lower bills. Climate psychology specialist Linda Aspey explains that taking climate action through solar installation helps people convert eco-anxiety into empowerment.
"It can help us realize we can have power, literally and metaphorically, and so feel less powerless," Aspey told researchers. Homeowners working toward energy independence often build supportive communities that reduce isolation while strengthening collective climate resilience.
The financial picture looks brighter too. While solar panels typically take a decade to pay back through energy savings, they're also boosting home values right now.
Analysis of over five million UK property transactions in 2021 found that homes with solar panels sold for up to 2% more than comparable homes without them. For a typical home, that premium immediately adds thousands in value.
Solar now powers more than 17% of the European Union's electricity mix as of early 2026, earning its description as a "shining star" of Europe's energy transition.
The technology keeps revealing new ways to improve daily life while building a cleaner future.
