The researchers believe the effect isn't unique to Switzerland. Previous studies from the United States and other European countries found similar clustering patterns when it comes to solar adoption.

The researchers ran simulations showing that each new solar system generates a median of 0.07 additional solar installations and 0.05 additional electric vehicles through peer influence alone. That same system inspires enough electricity savings among neighbors to total 3.7 megawatt hours annually.
The findings suggest that government subsidies for residential solar might deliver more value than policymakers realize. Supporting one household's solar installation doesn't just benefit that family but encourages multiple neighboring households to make greener choices too.
The researchers recommend that information campaigns highlight solar adoption within specific neighborhoods. Connecting households that already have solar panels with neighbors considering the switch could accelerate the green energy transition by tapping into local social dynamics.
