Solar Power Grew 33% to Meet Global Electricity Demand

🤯 Mind Blown

For the first time, clean energy growth matched all of last year's rising electricity demand while fossil fuel use stayed flat. Solar power led the charge with a stunning one-third jump in generation.

The world just hit a milestone that energy experts have been waiting years to see. In 2025, renewable energy sources met 100% of the growth in global electricity demand, keeping fossil fuel power generation completely flat for the first time.

Solar power drove the transformation, surging by nearly a third in a single year. Over the past decade, solar output has grown tenfold, roughly doubling every three years as costs have plummeted and installation has accelerated worldwide.

China powered more than half of this solar boom, cementing its position as both the world's largest renewable energy generator and the biggest exporter of clean energy technology. The country's massive investment in solar farms and wind turbines is reshaping the global energy landscape.

Solar energy covered three-quarters of new electricity demand in 2025. Wind power handled most of the remainder, while fossil fuel generation actually declined by 0.2%.

India showed equally impressive progress, adding record amounts of clean generation that outpaced its growing electricity needs. The country's fossil fuel power generation fell by 52 terawatt hours, marking a significant shift away from the coal dependence that has fueled its economic growth for decades.

Battery storage played a crucial supporting role in this transition. About 14% of last year's solar generation was stored in batteries for use during evening hours and cloudy days, solving one of renewable energy's biggest challenges.

Renewables now account for 34% of global electricity generation, edging past coal's 33% share for the first time in the modern era.

The Ripple Effect

This shift arrives at a perfect moment. As fossil fuel prices spike due to global conflicts, countries with strong renewable infrastructure are weathering the storm better than those still heavily dependent on imported oil and gas.

The clean energy momentum is helping nations reduce their exposure to volatile fuel markets while meeting rising electricity demand. Aditya Lolla, managing director at research firm Ember, calls it "the era of clean growth" becoming "a structural reality" rather than just an ambition.

The next challenge involves updating power grids and regulations to handle this new energy mix. Transport and heating systems, still heavily reliant on oil and gas in most countries, will need electrification to complete the fossil fuel transition.

More than 50 countries will meet in Colombia this month to discuss accelerating the global shift away from fossil fuels, a conversation made more urgent by recent energy market turbulence.

The tipping point everyone hoped for might already be here.
