Solar Power Hits 1 Terawatt Milestone Worldwide in 2025

The sun just became humanity's fastest-growing ally in the fight for clean energy.

Large-scale solar farms worldwide surpassed 1 terawatt of capacity in 2025, according to PV data consultancy Wiki-Solar. That's enough clean electricity to power hundreds of millions of homes without burning a single ounce of fossil fuel.

The milestone represents 23,285 solar projects across 33 countries, with nearly 250 gigawatts added in 2025 alone. That's the biggest single-year jump in history.

Philip Wolfe, who founded Wiki-Solar after joining the solar sector 50 years ago, remembers when critics dismissed solar as irrelevant. Now he predicts it will become the world's primary energy source within 20 years.

At current growth rates, utility-scale solar will match wind power by the end of 2026. When you add rooftop and smaller systems, total global solar capacity already sits at 2.4 terawatts, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency.

China leads the charge with 446 gigawatts across 5,639 plants. The United States follows with 162.8 gigawatts, then India with 109.6 gigawatts.

Four new countries joined the top 33 solar nations this year: Mexico, Ukraine, Malaysia, and Taiwan. South Africa remains the only African nation in the ranking, sitting at eighteenth place with 6.2 gigawatts.

This solar surge means cleaner air for millions of people living near power plants. It means lower electricity costs as renewable energy becomes cheaper than fossil fuels. It means jobs building and maintaining solar farms in countries on every continent.
