Minton even 3D-printed custom cases that make the bigger versions look like standard military radios. The detector heads to the Grafenwoehr Training Area in the coming weeks for field testing with actual troops.

What started as one sergeant's basement project could protect soldiers across the entire U.S. Army. Maj. Lindsay McCue, who oversees Army innovation initiatives, said the detector represents exactly where the military needs to go: empowering troops to identify problems and create solutions themselves.
