South Africa Unites All 9 Provinces to Fight Livestock Disease

South Africa is making history by bringing every level of government together to protect farmers and their herds from a dangerous livestock disease.

The national parliament and representatives from all nine provincial legislatures met this weekend for an unprecedented workshop focused on combating foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). The outbreak has affected cattle farms across the country, putting family livelihoods and food security at risk.

The immediate response includes rolling out one million vaccine doses to outbreak areas across the provinces. KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, the two hardest-hit regions, will each receive 200,000 doses. The Eastern Cape gets 150,000 doses, while North West, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo will each receive 100,000 doses.

But the plan doesn't stop there. The government is preparing to vaccinate South Africa's entire national cattle herd of over 14 million animals, ensuring comprehensive protection for the country's livestock industry.

Gauteng Agriculture MEC Vuyiswa Ramakgopa shared encouraging progress from her province. Despite recording nearly 300,000 cases, the provincial government has already administered 288,315 vaccine doses. That number grows daily as vaccination efforts continue.

This collaborative approach marks a turning point in how South Africa handles agricultural crises. By uniting national parliament, provincial leadership, local government, and farming industry stakeholders in one forum, the country is showing what coordinated action looks like.

While challenges remain, including reaching communal herds that graze freely rather than staying on fenced farms, the unified response demonstrates government's commitment to finding solutions. Provincial teams are working through logistical issues like providing water access for corralled animals during quarantine periods.
