South African Judge Remembered for Quiet Integrity

Some leaders change the world through quiet consistency, and South African Judge Achmat Jappie was one of them.

Jappie, who passed away at 70 in Durban this week, spent nearly 30 years on the bench making sure justice worked for everyone. He arrived in 1998 when South Africa was still figuring out what a fair legal system looked like after apartheid.

Unlike judges who chase headlines, Jappie preferred getting the work done right. When he became judge president of KwaZulu-Natal High Court in 2015, he didn't just make legal rulings from an ivory tower. He noticed the windows hadn't been cleaned in 15 years and that case files kept disappearing.

He treated broken infrastructure as a justice problem, not just an administrative headache. His motto was simple: the court had to work before it could be improved.

In rape cases, Jappie paid close attention to how victims' lives changed after violence. In one ruling, he carefully documented how a survivor could no longer live in her own home because of trauma. He sentenced the attacker to 35 years, explaining that punishment reflected the boundaries society must set for itself.

His most important work happened behind the scenes, chairing tribunals that held other judges accountable. When fellow judges crossed ethical lines, Jappie led investigations into gross misconduct. The work was dense and unglamorous, but it protected the integrity of South Africa's courts.

The Ripple Effect

Jappie's approach to leadership created lasting change beyond individual cases. By demanding better resources and supporting diversity on the bench, he helped build a justice system more people could trust.

Attorney Ravi Moodley, who appeared before Jappie for years, remembered walking into chambers expecting formal introductions. "I know Ravi," the judge said, cutting through the ceremony. Moodley describes someone down to earth who gave guidance freely and noticed details others missed.

Colleagues remember Jappie as serious about preparation but quick to laugh. He spoke from the bench in what one observer called a "zen-like manner," expecting precision but offering warmth.

When Jappie retired in 2022, he left the same way he worked: without fanfare, having quietly strengthened the foundation of South African justice for nearly 25 years.
