South African Teen's Peace Art Wins National Competition

Khushi Ashley Moonilal just earned the chance to show the world what peace looks like through a South African student's eyes.

The Whetstone Primary School pupil won the 2025/2026 Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Competition at the national level, beating artwork from more than 100 Lions Clubs across South Africa and Eswatini. Her prize? Representing her country in an international competition that draws entries from over 200 nations.

The competition invites students aged 11 to 13 to express their vision of peace through art. This year's theme, "Together as One," asked young artists to explore unity, compassion, hope, and global harmony through their creativity.

Khushi's artwork impressed judges at both district and national levels with its powerful message and artistic quality. Her teacher, Mrs. L Govender, guided her throughout the competition journey at the Phoenix community school.

East Coast Lions Club president Gopika Dass celebrated the win as proof that young people can become ambassadors for peace through creativity. "The Peace Poster Competition provides pupils with an opportunity to use their creativity to promote understanding, respect, and unity within their communities and across the world," Dass said.

School principal Mrs. V Pillay praised Khushi's dedication during a special celebration held in her honor. "Her artwork carries a message of peace that connects hearts without the need for words," Pillay said.

The Ripple Effect

Khushi's success brought recognition beyond just personal achievement. Both she and Whetstone Primary received prize money at district and national levels, along with art materials and certificates of excellence.

Her win energized the entire school community and Phoenix neighborhood. Students now see how creativity and hard work can open doors to global opportunities, inspiring the next generation of young artists to share their voices.
