Their mission was to design Hermes, a futuristic spacecraft capable of transporting 3,000 people to Mercury. The challenge required a sleepless weekend sprint navigating unfamiliar accents, clashing design philosophies, and intense corporate pressure.

Joseph Allderman and Ethan Schoombee handled propulsion and navigation as the only two students responsible for getting the craft to Mercury. Schoombee fought successfully to power the ship with realistic nuclear fission energy instead of theoretical fusion, arguing that "a design based on reality is far better than one that is just theoretical."

Zayaan Abdurahman designed life-support systems to keep 3,000 people alive and sane in deep space. Dean Weich and Qayalah Omar tackled the business side, racing against the clock to prove the multibillion-dollar vessel was economically viable.

The victory proves African students belong on the global STEM stage. "We weren't only representing our schools, we were representing the entire continent," Abdurahman reflected.

The team's diverse perspectives became their greatest strength. "People from different places thought in different ways, which helped us look at the problem from different perspectives and cover all our bases," Weich explained.

After defending their massive proposal before NASA judges and a retired astronaut, Rockdonnell won. These seven teenagers proved that talent, determination, and teamwork can launch dreams beyond Earth's atmosphere.
