South Australia Scraps Public School Fees Starting 2027

Imagine telling parents their kids can attend public school completely free starting next year. That's exactly what South Australia's Labor government promises if voters return them to office this March.

Premier Peter Malinauskas announced the plan to eliminate all public school fees for primary and high school students from 2027. Currently, families pay $382 annually for primary students and $723 for secondary students.

The move would save roughly 90,000 families more than $8,000 per child across their entire schooling. For families with multiple children, that adds up to real breathing room in household budgets.

"We believe very much in making sure there is high quality education available to every last young South Australian regardless of where they live and their economic circumstance," Malinauskas said at the announcement in Grange.

The policy builds on an existing $200 per child rebate. The total cost to taxpayers would reach $300 million over four years, funded by what the Premier calls the state's growing economy and strong fiscal position.

Education Minister Blair Boyer addressed concerns about potential enrollment surges. He noted that a 2025 federal funding agreement ensures that more students means more Commonwealth support, which helps maintain the fee relief program.

This policy represents more than saved dollars. It removes a barrier that subtly divides families based on what they can afford to pay.

When education becomes truly free, children from all backgrounds start on equal footing. Parents can redirect saved funds toward other needs like healthy food, extracurriculars, or simply reducing financial stress that affects family wellbeing.

The announcement came as part of campaigning ahead of South Australia's March 21 election. Liberal leader Ashton Hurn welcomed cost-of-living relief but noted "the devil is always in the detail."

Meanwhile, Hurn launched her own environmental pledge at a Clean Up Australia Day event in Glenelg. The Liberals committed $4.3 million toward achieving zero ocean litter by 2035, focusing on upgrading stormwater drainage systems that currently allow debris to reach pristine coastlines.

Both policies signal growing political focus on quality of life issues that matter to everyday South Australians.

For 90,000 families counting every dollar, free public education means one less financial worry and one more reason to believe government can make life genuinely easier.
