South Carolina District Hits Five-Year Testing High

Students in a South Carolina school district just proved that focused teaching strategies can turn test scores around in a big way.

Lexington School District Two, serving West Columbia and surrounding areas, released statewide testing results this week showing students achieved their highest scores in over five years. The gains came across multiple subjects and grade levels, with students outperforming their peers statewide in several key areas.

The results from SC READY tests, given to third through eighth graders during the 2025-2026 school year, showed particular strength in math and science. Fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth graders beat statewide averages in math, while all tested grades surpassed state scores in science. Fourth and fifth graders also outpaced state results in English and Language Arts.

Perhaps most impressive: 24 students achieved perfect scores, the highest number the district has seen in recent years. Nearly all tested grades showed progress in math, and every single grade level posted growth in science.

Superintendent Dr. Angela Cooper pointed to partnerships like the Palmetto Math Project and tools like Zearn that help teachers understand exactly what students need at each grade level. State education officials noted that updated math standards, designed to be more appropriate for how kids actually learn, helped teachers across South Carolina know what to focus on. This clarity in the classroom appears to be paying off not just in Lexington Two, but statewide.

Deputy Superintendent Dr. David McDonald emphasized that the gains came from zeroing in on critical content and making sure students truly master essential skills before moving forward. When students struggled, teachers provided targeted help right away rather than waiting.

The district acknowledges there's still work ahead, but these results show what's possible when schools align their teaching methods, invest in teacher training, and focus on meeting each student where they are.
