South Korea Deploys AI Firefighting Robots to Save Lives

When a building catches fire, every second counts. Thick smoke, collapsing floors, and temperatures hot enough to melt steel turn firefighting into one of the world's most dangerous jobs.

Developed by Hyundai Motor Group and donated to the government in February 2026, the compact armored robot looks like a heavy-duty tracked vehicle equipped with infrared cameras and a powerful water cannon. It pushes into areas too dangerous for people, transmitting real-time information while suppressing fires from the heart of the blaze.

Fire Lieutenant Yanghyun Kim of the Capital Region 119 Special Rescue Service says the robot has already transformed their work. It discharges larger volumes of water than manual methods and reaches areas blocked by toxic smoke or structural collapse, shortening response times when minutes mean lives.

The firefighting robot represents just one piece of South Korea's broader vision for an "AI Universal Basic Society." The government aims to integrate artificial intelligence into everyday life to improve public services and expand opportunities for everyone.

At Seoul National University Hospital, AI now transcribes and summarizes medical records in real time, freeing physicians to focus on patients instead of paperwork. The system manages referrals and data exchange between hospitals, saving critical minutes for patients needing urgent surgery.

In Anyang, a Smart City Integration Center monitors over 8,000 AI-enabled cameras across the city. Operators track traffic, detect flooding, identify fires, and help locate missing persons, especially older adults with dementia. When someone goes missing, real-time alerts circulate through public safety systems, turning residents into active participants in search efforts.
