Fresh sweet potatoes being prepared for export with natural bio-based preservation coating in South Korea

South Korea Sweet Potatoes Get Bio-Tech to Reach Thailand

🤯 Mind Blown

South Korean farmers are using natural bio-technology to keep sweet potatoes fresh during long trips to Thailand. The innovation could help more farmers export their crops to distant markets.

Sweet potatoes from South Korea are staying fresher longer on their journey to Thailand, thanks to a natural bio-based coating that protects them during the long trip. The breakthrough could open new markets for farmers who previously couldn't ship fresh produce across long distances.

Gongdeok Agricultural Cooperative partnered with freshness preservation company Ecogear to export sweet potatoes using the new technology. The shipment left South Korea on May 22 as part of the Korea Agriculture Technology Promotion Agency's Green Bio Product Commercialization Support Project.

The challenge has always been the journey itself. High temperatures and humidity in Southeast Asian markets cause fresh produce to lose moisture and quality during transport and storage, making exports risky for growers.

Ecogear developed a natural biomaterial-based coating that reduces moisture loss and quality deterioration on the surface of sweet potatoes. The technology acts like a protective shield, keeping the produce fresh from farm to store shelf.

For South Korean farmers, this means something bigger than just preserved sweet potatoes. Storage limitations and quality problems have historically prevented them from reaching international customers, limiting their income and growth opportunities.

The Ripple Effect

The project represents a public-private partnership designed to strengthen South Korean agricultural exports globally. The Rural Development Administration is backing companies working in green biotechnology to help them enter overseas markets.

During the Thailand distribution, project partners will collect data on how well the technology performs under real-world conditions. Additional export demonstrations are scheduled for November during peak export season.

The technology isn't limited to sweet potatoes either. Ecogear plans to evaluate whether the same bio-based coating can protect other agricultural products during long-distance shipping, potentially helping even more farmers reach international markets.

An Ecogear representative called the Thailand export "an important case confirming that our natural bio-based freshness preservation technology is applicable in actual overseas distribution environments." The sweet potatoes will be sold through retail channels across Thailand.

The innovation shows how nature-based solutions can solve modern agricultural challenges while reducing food waste and supporting rural communities.
