SpaceX Eyes 10,000 Annual Launches Within Five Years

SpaceX is planning a launch rate that would have seemed impossible just a decade ago. The company told federal aviation officials it aims to reach 10,000 launches per year within five years, up from 170 in 2025.

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell shared the ambitious goal during a meeting with FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford in May 2026. The company already has 10,000 satellites orbiting Earth and wants to launch 10,000 communication satellites annually to expand global internet access.

Bedford acknowledged the goal was achievable but emphasized one crucial requirement: reliability. "We need to see a lot more reliability," he told reporters after the meeting, noting that both SpaceX and the FAA will need to push themselves to new levels.

The scaling challenge is massive. Going from 170 to 10,000 launches means SpaceX would need to launch roughly 27 times per day, every day. That's more than one launch every hour around the clock.

The FAA Administrator said his agency isn't currently limiting space launches, but funding will become critical. "I can see a future where we will be the limiting factor, because we are not putting enough funding into our space team," Bedford explained.

Safety remains the top priority. The FAA must temporarily restrict flights in certain areas during launches, which can disrupt commercial air traffic. The agency is reviewing data from previous launches to better understand risks and streamline approval processes.

The timing matters for national goals too. President Trump wants astronauts back on the moon before 2028, which requires unlocking innovation through government and industry partnership.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about impressive numbers. More launches mean faster deployment of satellite internet to remote communities worldwide. Families in rural areas without broadband could finally access telemedicine, online education, and economic opportunities that urban areas take for granted.

The increased launch capacity could also accelerate scientific research. More affordable access to space means more climate monitoring satellites, more astronomical observations, and more experimental platforms for breakthroughs in materials science and medicine.

SpaceX's longer-term vision extends even further. In January, the company announced plans for a constellation of 1 million satellites that would harness solar power to support AI data centers, potentially revolutionizing how we process information.

The conversation between SpaceX and the FAA shows something encouraging: ambitious goals meeting practical planning. Bedford described their discussion as "very frank," focused on identifying constraints and working together to overcome them.
