SpaceX Plans Moon Factories to Build AI Satellites

Building factories on another world just moved from science fiction to SpaceX's business plan.

During the company's first quarterly earnings call as a publicly traded entity, Elon Musk announced that SpaceX will construct manufacturing facilities on the moon using robots to handle the heavy work. The factories will produce Starmind AI satellites, which the company plans to launch into Earth orbit by the millions in coming years.

"We are going to land a lot of tonnage on the moon," Musk told investors on August 4th. "We're going to build the factories on the moon."

The lunar facilities will manufacture key satellite components like solar panels and cooling radiators right on the moon's surface. Once built, the satellites will launch using electromagnetic mass drivers, powerful rail gun systems that fling payloads into space without traditional rockets.

SpaceX's plan relies on its Starship megarocket, currently preparing for its 14th test flight. The fully reusable vehicle can carry far more cargo than existing rockets while cutting launch costs by 90% compared to SpaceX's workhorse Falcon 9.

The robotic workforce likely includes Optimus, the humanoid robot built by Tesla, another Musk company. These robots are already slated for Mars missions to help prepare the Red Planet for human settlement.

The Ripple Effect

This lunar manufacturing vision could multiply Earth's economic output by a thousand times or more, according to Musk's projections. Building satellites in the moon's low gravity and launching them without fuel costs could make space-based infrastructure dramatically cheaper and more abundant.

SpaceX is already building the infrastructure to support thousands of Starship launches yearly. The company is expanding production of Raptor engines, constructing multiple launch pads in Texas and Florida, and scaling up its manufacturing facilities.

The company reported $7.8 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2026, nearly double the same period in 2025. SpaceX went public in June through the largest IPO in history, raising $86 billion and achieving a $1.77 trillion valuation that ranks it among America's seven most valuable companies.

What sounds like wild speculation today might be tomorrow's reality when you're the company that already lands rockets on floating platforms.
