Spain Airlines to Livestream Solar Eclipse from 30,000 Feet

If you've ever wanted to watch a solar eclipse from 30,000 feet above Earth, Iberia Airlines just made that possible without leaving your couch.

The Spanish airline is chartering a special flight on August 12 to follow the path of totality during a rare solar eclipse. They're livestreaming the entire event on social media, offering viewers a crystal-clear view of the sun's corona from cruising altitude.

Flight IB1473 (named after astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus's birth year) will take off from Madrid and fly over Palencia, staying right in the path of totality. The timing couldn't be more special: this marks the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula in 114 years.

Iberia isn't just doing this for the spectacle. A team of researchers from the Shelios project will be on board, taking advantage of the unobstructed view above Earth's atmosphere. Ground-based observations often struggle with atmospheric interference, but at 30,000 feet, scientists get a cleaner look at the solar corona.

"This flight allows us to leverage the advantages of observing from cruising altitude to contribute to the study of an exceptional astronomical phenomenon," said Diego Fernández, Iberia's director of strategy, transformation, and sustainability.

The eclipse's path of totality will sweep across Greenland, Iceland, and Spain, with totality lasting about two minutes for those directly in its path. Major cities like Madrid and Barcelona will experience 99% coverage, while London, Paris, and Brussels will see partial eclipses.
