Spain Bans Smoking on Beaches and Terraces Nationwide

Imagine enjoying your morning coffee on a sunny terrace without cigarette smoke wafting over from the next table. That's about to become reality across Spain.

The Spanish government just approved sweeping new tobacco laws that will make beaches, restaurant terraces, and outdoor venues completely smoke-free. Health Minister Mónica García put it simply: "Anyone who wants to enjoy their leisure time freely on a terrace should be able to do so without the smoke from nearby tables becoming part of the menu."

The reform represents Spain's biggest update to tobacco legislation in over a decade. It comes as smoking still causes around 50,000 deaths annually in the country, and as new nicotine products like vapes and nicotine pouches have created loopholes in the old 2005 law.

Here's what changes under the new rules. Smoking and vaping will be banned on all beach and pool areas, outdoor restaurant terraces, sports facilities, national parks, and public event venues. Fifteen-meter protection zones will surround entrances to schools, hospitals, universities, libraries, museums, and playgrounds.

For the first time ever, the law explicitly bans anyone under 18 from smoking or vaping, not just from buying these products. This matters because while daily smoking among Spanish teens has dropped to just 4.3 percent (the lowest since 1994), occasional use remains at 15.5 percent among 14 to 18 year olds.

Electronic cigarettes now face the same restrictions as regular cigarettes, whether they contain nicotine or not. Vape shops will only be able to sell these products in specialized stores with no outdoor advertising visible from the street.

The advertising crackdown extends to all media platforms. TV presenters and guests won't be allowed to appear while smoking or holding tobacco products on screen, and brand logos can't be shown either.
