Spain Boosts Wind and Hydro Upgrades With €512M Fund

Spain is supercharging its clean energy future with a massive funding boost that proves renewable power is more popular than ever.

The Spanish government announced it's expanding its wind and hydroelectric upgrade program to €512 million, a 75% jump from the original €292 million budget. The reason? So many companies wanted to participate that the initial funding couldn't keep up with demand.

Vice President Sara Aagesen shared the exciting news, explaining that the money will help replace old wind turbines that have reached the end of their useful lives with state-of-the-art models. The program also supports modernizing hydroelectric facilities up to 50 megawatts with the latest sustainable technology.

The numbers tell an inspiring story. Officials estimate the funding will support upgrading over 2,000 megawatts of wind farm capacity, plus another 900 megawatts of hydroelectric generation. Combined with new hybrid storage systems, these upgrades will trigger more than €3 billion in total investment across Spain's renewable energy sector.

This second round builds on an already successful first edition that awarded €186 million in grants. But the new version comes with even better terms, making it easier for companies to add hybrid battery storage to their projects and raising the size limit for eligible hydroelectric plants from 10 to 50 megawatts.

The funding comes from the European Union's NextGenEU recovery program, turning pandemic recovery dollars into long-term climate solutions. Spain's Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving manages the grants, ensuring the money goes toward projects that deliver real environmental and efficiency gains.
