Spain's Ballet-CrossFit Swimmers Redefine Competition
Spain's artistic swimming team blends CrossFit, ballet, and gymnastics training to create "Berghain," a stunning acrobatic routine set to Rosalía's music. The innovative approach is helping the most decorated European nation in the sport reach new heights.
Spain's artistic swimming team is flying higher than ever, and it's not just because of what happens in the pool.
The reigning world and continental champions have revolutionized their training by combining three unexpected disciplines: CrossFit for explosive power, ballet for grace and control, and artistic gymnastics for breathtaking aerial stunts. The result is "Berghain," a jaw-dropping acrobatic routine set to Spanish superstar Rosalía's hit collaboration with Björk and Yves Tumor.
Head coach Andrea Fuentes, a four-time Olympic medalist herself, heard the song and instantly scrapped her original plans for the season. The dramatic composition inspired her to create something no one had seen before, even though the team wasn't initially planning a new acrobatic routine.
The training transformation starts three mornings each week with CrossFit sessions led by specialists Pau and Iker. This builds the raw strength needed for the swimmers forming the base to launch their "flyer," 19-year-old Meritxell Ferré, into spectacular aerial maneuvers. "When you work with specialists, everything goes better," Fuentes tells Olympics.com.
Two-time Olympic gymnast Víctor Cano works directly with Ferré on acrobatic techniques, ensuring every flip and twist maximizes the routine's difficulty score. Meanwhile, ballet training helps the entire team maintain body control, extension, and flexibility throughout their performance.
"We need to give the jumper a good push while sticking to the choreography," explains team star Iris Tió. "The more leg kicks we have out of the water, the better our score is. Since we're not touching the bottom of the pool, we need serious strength."
The routine debuted at the Pontevedra World Cup in May on home soil, earning silver. Its second competitive performance came at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris this August, where Spain aimed to peak after polishing every detail.
Why This Inspires
Spain already holds five Olympic medals in artistic swimming, more than any other European nation. But they're not resting on past success. By embracing unconventional training methods and allowing art to guide athletic innovation, they're showing that excellence comes from staying curious and willing to evolve. The team's willingness to completely reimagine their approach mid-season demonstrates the courage required to reach the next level in any field.
Spain's blend of strength, artistry, and innovation proves that breaking boundaries means being brave enough to try something completely new.
