Spain's Tyre Recycling Cuts 1.38M Tonnes of CO2 Emissions

Every year, Spain keeps 1.38 million tonnes of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere just by recycling old tires instead of burning or burying them.

A recent report from TNU (Tratamiento Neumáticos Usados) reveals that Spain's national tire recycling system is delivering major climate benefits while solving a waste problem. The country collects and processes worn-out tires, transforming them into new products instead of letting them pile up in landfills or release harmful emissions through burning.

To put that number in perspective, 1.38 million tonnes of CO2 is equivalent to taking nearly 300,000 cars off the road for an entire year. Spain processes hundreds of thousands of used tires annually, turning what was once considered trash into valuable materials like rubberized asphalt, sports surfaces, and even new manufacturing components.

The recycling process itself generates far fewer emissions than producing virgin materials from scratch. When old tires get shredded and repurposed, manufacturers avoid the energy-intensive processes of extracting and refining new rubber and petroleum-based products.

Spain's success with tire recycling demonstrates how circular economy thinking can tackle multiple problems at once. Communities benefit from cleaner landscapes free of tire dumps that once attracted mosquitoes and posed fire hazards. Athletes play on safer sports surfaces made from recycled rubber.
