Sperm Whales Blow Bubbles to Float While Resting Upright

Imagine sleeping standing up in the middle of the ocean without floating away. Sperm whales have mastered this incredible trick, and scientists just figured out how they do it.

Researchers studying 42 tagged sperm whales near Norway's Lofoten Islands discovered that these ocean giants release air bubbles to maintain perfect buoyancy while resting upright. The study, conducted between 2005 and 2019, finally proved what scientists had long suspected but never confirmed.

"We already knew that sperm whales rest in a stereotypical vertical position and that they had been observed releasing bubbles during these resting periods," said lead researcher Noémie Freymond from the Université de Neuchâtel in Switzerland. But until now, no one had systematically recorded how this bubble release actually works.

Sperm whales are the only whales known to rest vertically, floating just below the surface like giant submarines on pause. A massive oil filled organ in their heads, called the spermaceti organ, makes them naturally buoyant.

As the whales drift upward, decreasing water pressure causes air in their lungs to expand, pushing them toward the surface. By releasing carefully controlled bubbles, they counteract that upward push and stay submerged instead of bobbing up and down.

Seventeen of the 42 tagged whales were recorded resting this way, sometimes for just a few minutes and other times for up to three hours. Scientists call it resting rather than sleeping because they haven't yet conducted brain activity tests to confirm true sleep.

The research revealed something fascinating: the volume of air whales breathe in during resting dives differs from their foraging dives. This shows the whales actively adjust their breathing based on what they're doing.

This discovery isn't just cool science. Understanding how sperm whales rest and how aware they are during these periods could help protect them from ship strikes and other human caused dangers.

Sperm whales aren't alone in their bubble wizardry. Humpback whales create bubble nets to trap prey, dolphins blow bubbles during play, and gray whales use them to control buoyancy while diving.
