Sperm Whales Change How They Talk When Ships Are Near

Scientists discovered that sperm whales off the coast of Dominica change their communication style when boats pass by, offering a fascinating window into how these intelligent creatures respond to human activity.

Researchers from Project Ceti spent four years recording 15 sperm whales near the Caribbean island, capturing more than 1,000 distinct clicking patterns called codas. Unlike many marine animals that simply get louder in noisy conditions, sperm whales appear to prioritize changing the content and tempo of their communication instead. The team used minimally invasive methods, attaching audio tags to whales via drones and verifying ship presence through digital geolocation data.
