Sporting Lagos Wins Promotion to Nigeria's Top League

A Lagos football club just achieved what every second-tier team dreams of: promotion to the big leagues.

Sporting Lagos secured their place in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after defeating Osun United 1-0 on Thursday. Alex Leme scored the winning goal in the 17th minute off a cross from Aliyu Baba, sending the team and their fans into celebration.

The victory marked the end of a two-year journey back to Nigeria's top football division. Sporting Lagos had spent the past two seasons in the Nigerian National League, the country's second tier, working their way back up.

The club dominated their conference this season, finishing at the top of Conference B with 36 points from 18 matches. Under coach Jeremy Butler's leadership, they proved themselves the strongest team in their division.

Sporting Lagos becomes the third team to earn promotion this season, joining Doma United and Inter Lagos. The achievement is especially meaningful for Lagos football fans, as it brings the number of Lagos-based clubs in the NPFL to three for the 2026/27 season.
