Spotify Opens Free Kid Accounts in US, UK, and 4 More Markets

Millions of parents just got a better way to share music with their kids without sacrificing their own perfectly curated playlists.

Spotify announced today it's offering free managed accounts for children under 13 to parents in the US, UK, Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The feature previously required a Premium Family subscription but now works with any Spotify plan, including free accounts.

The expansion means kids get their own personalized recommendations and can build their own playlists without hijacking mom or dad's Discover Weekly. More countries including Canada, New Zealand, and nations across Europe and Latin America will gain access soon.

Spotify first launched managed accounts in October 2025 for Premium Family subscribers. The company designed them specifically with young listeners in mind, focusing on audio content while keeping safety front and center.

Parents control what their children can access. Explicit content gets filtered automatically, and guardians can approve specific songs and artists. The accounts disable video content and Canvas looping visuals by default to keep the experience simple and appropriate.

Privacy protections run deep. Kids can't send or receive messages, their profiles stay private and unsearchable, and they can't upload photos. Instead, they choose from kid-friendly avatars to personalize their accounts.

The Ripple Effect

The change solves a problem many music-loving parents know too well. When the whole family shares one account, your year-end Spotify Wrapped becomes a confusing mix of lullabies, cartoon themes, and whatever you actually listen to.

Now families can enjoy music together while keeping everyone's tastes distinct. Kids develop their own musical identity and learn to curate their listening experience in a protected environment.

Setting up a managed account takes just minutes. Parents open the Spotify app menu, tap Add Account, then select the option to create a managed account for a child under 13. From there, they can customize settings for videos and explicit content before launching the profile.

The move makes Spotify more accessible to families who weren't ready to commit to a premium subscription but still wanted age-appropriate streaming for their children. It's a win for both family budgets and the soundtrack to those never-ending car rides.
