
Startup Raises $10M for Floating Nuclear Power Plants

That's the vision driving Bluecore Energy, a startup founded by Kofi Asante that just raised $10 million to make floating nuclear reactors a reality. The company announced Tuesday it will build small modular reactors on barges that can dock at ports and plug directly into local power grids.
The technology isn't science fiction. These reactors use water-cooling systems that have operated safely for over 70 years. Water gets heated, creates steam, and spins turbines to generate electricity in a completely closed loop.
What makes Bluecore special is mobility. Traditional nuclear plants stay in one place forever, but these barges can ship clean power wherever it's needed most. When a barge arrives at a new location, it produces zero transport emissions because the energy travels with it.
Each floating reactor can power about 15,000 homes or meet the electricity needs of a major port. The system only needs refueling once every few years, making it far more efficient than fossil fuel alternatives.
Bluecore has already secured a port terminal, barge, and test reactor vessel with the new funding. The company is running simulations with water flow to validate its design before building the real thing.

Safety comes first. The uranium fuel sits inside thick steel pressure vessels, surrounded by concrete shielding and additional steel lining. Multiple backup systems ensure nothing can go wrong.
The Ripple Effect
The timing couldn't be better. Artificial intelligence data centers are consuming massive amounts of electricity, often pulling power and water from nearby communities. Asante says AI executives have told him they'd love their own clean energy source with ocean water access, eliminating the strain on local resources.
Coastal communities could benefit too. By connecting to power grids via underwater cables, these floating plants could deliver reliable electricity without taking up valuable land or competing for freshwater.
The investor lineup shows serious confidence in the concept. Slauson & Co. led the round, joined by Harlem Capital, Precursor Ventures, Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen, and even Kevin Hart's HartBeat Ventures.
Asante believes a production line of these small reactors could bring clean energy to most of the country. With 95,000 miles of U.S. coastline and thousands of ports, the opportunity is enormous.
Nuclear energy produces no carbon emissions and runs around the clock, unlike solar and wind. Putting reactors on water solves many traditional concerns about location and cooling needs.
The future of clean energy might just be floating offshore, ready to dock wherever the lights need to stay on.
