Stephen Baldwin: Faith Over Fame After God-Sent Housekeeper

Stephen Baldwin could have been one of Hollywood's biggest names, but he chose something he values far more: a life centered on faith.

After his breakout role in the 1995 Oscar-winning thriller "The Usual Suspects," Baldwin had every opportunity to chase stardom. Instead, the 60-year-old actor told People magazine he never wanted that path. "I didn't want to be Tom Cruise and have to make $100 million at the box office," he said. "I'd rather be a schmuck from Massapequa."

Everything changed in 2001 when Baldwin and his wife Kennya hired a Brazilian housekeeper named Augusta. She told them God had sent her to their home because they would one day become Christians and start a ministry together.

Baldwin admits he was skeptical at first. But after attending evangelical events with his sister and witnessing a Christian skateboarding ministry that combined extreme sports with worship, something clicked.

"Down on the beach, they had built a skate park on the sand with plywood," Baldwin recalled. "These funky, super committed, cool, tattooed, pierced skateboarders would skate, stop, pick up a microphone and start preaching evangelistically." Watching 5,000 kids gathered around these skaters, Baldwin felt a calling he couldn't ignore.

He created a Christian skate video called "Livin' It" that distributed 10,000 copies in six months. When churches started requesting live events with the skaters, Baldwin made his decision. He left Hollywood.

The Ripple Effect

Over the next four years, Baldwin visited 125 churches across the country, sharing his message of faith with thousands of people. Today, he receives countless messages from people telling him how his work has touched their lives.

The actor hasn't let Hollywood's mixed reception to his religious and political outspokenness slow him down. He's now focused on producing faith-based films for younger audiences and hosting his podcast "One Bad Movie," where actors discuss their worst filming experiences.

Becoming a grandfather has deepened Baldwin's gratitude even more. "I've done 100 movies, I've made more money than I could have wildly imagined, and I'm married to the hottest chick I've ever seen in my life," he said. "Jesus is my rock. My wife is my anchor."

At 60, Baldwin believes his most important work is still ahead of him.
