Stowaway Fox Basil Beats Rare Disease After Ship Journey
A red fox who accidentally sailed from England to New York has made a full recovery from a rare European parasite. After treatment at the Bronx Zoo, Basil is now healthy and thriving thousands of miles from home.
A curious red fox is getting a second chance at life after an unexpected transatlantic adventure led to lifesaving medical care.
Basil, a two-year-old red fox, somehow snuck aboard a cargo ship in Southampton, England, and traveled 3,500 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. When US customs officers found him hiding among the cargo at the Port of New York and New Jersey in February, he looked worse for wear.
The Bronx Zoo took him in and discovered the fox was infected with French heartworm, a parasite rare in the United States. The parasite infects blood vessels in the lungs and can cause severe respiratory disease. Without treatment, Basil's condition could have become life threatening.
Veterinary staff immediately started a month-long treatment program using three different types of deworming medication. The team ran multiple diagnostic tests to track his progress and make sure the infection was completely cleared.

The results exceeded everyone's hopes. Basil gained nearly three pounds, going from a skinny 11 pounds to a healthy 14 pounds. His coat became fuller and shinier, and his energy returned.
The Bright Side
This accidental voyage might have saved Basil's life. If he had stayed in England without treatment, the rare parasite could have caused serious complications. Instead, his unplanned trip connected him with world-class veterinary care at exactly the right time.
Craig Piper, the zoo's interim director, celebrated the fox's transformation. "Basil has done exceptionally well since arriving at the Bronx Zoo," he said. "We are very pleased with his recovery and continued progress since his long journey across the Atlantic."
The zoo is now working to find Basil a permanent home where he can live out his days in comfort and safety. After everything he's been through, the scrappy traveler deserves a happy ending.
Sometimes the most unexpected journeys lead to the best outcomes.
