Matimba Mabonda grew up in a shack in Grasmere, Johannesburg, dreaming of better housing for his family and millions of South Africans facing a severe housing shortage. Now the University of Cape Town MSc student has turned that dream into reality with an innovative home that tackles two massive problems at once.
Mabonda and his contractor father just completed a three-bedroom house built primarily from soil and plastic waste. The home includes a kitchen, bathroom, living space, and garage, and it looks exactly like any other house on the street in Ennerdale.
"Until someone tells you that this house was built using soil and other waste material, you'd never say that this is not a brick-and-mortar house," Mabonda said. The entire project took less than a month to complete.
After graduating with his chemical engineering degree, Mabonda launched LolaGreen, a startup focused on sustainable building solutions. His original plan involved "lolabricks" made from plastic and industrial waste, but funding challenges led him to explore earth build technologies using raw soil instead.
The construction process requires carefully analyzing and testing soil to determine the right ratios for building. Mabonda's team added plastic waste to the raw soil mixture, creating walls that are more than 90% earth materials. The result is a structurally sound home that requires no cement or water in the wall construction.

The benefits go beyond sustainability. The earthen walls provide natural temperature regulation, keeping the house cool during summer and warm in winter without expensive air conditioning. This makes the home both eco-friendly and cost-effective to live in.
The Ripple Effect
South Africa generates approximately 122 million tonnes of solid waste annually, and the country faces a critical housing shortage affecting millions of families. Mabonda's innovation addresses both challenges while offering an affordable alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar construction.
Requests are already pouring in from people wanting LolaGreen to build similar homes. The combination of lower costs, faster construction timelines, and environmental benefits makes the option appealing to many South Africans seeking affordable housing.
Mabonda is now working with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research to obtain official certification for his building method. Gaining approval from construction certifying bodies like Agrement South Africa will allow him to scale up operations and transform the construction industry.
His long-term vision extends beyond individual homes. Mabonda aims to decarbonize the construction industry and educate the public about what's possible without conventional materials.
"I always wanted to improve things for my family," he said. "We also have a massive housing crisis in South Africa, so if I could contribute to solving this crisis while keeping sustainability top of mind, that would make me so happy."
From a childhood in a shack to building innovative eco-homes, Mabonda is proving that waste materials and creative engineering can construct a brighter future.
