Student Turns Failed Matric Into University Success Story

When Sinelizwi Dyibishe received his student card at Rhodes University, the relief washed over him like a wave. The boy from Grahamstown who had failed his matric exams was now officially a university student.

When his matric results came back below expectations, the disappointment stung. But instead of accepting defeat, Sinelizwi chose to reframe what failure meant.

"I believe that failure is also a learning path," he said. "I once heard someone say failure is the first attempt in learning."

That shift in perspective led him to GADRA Education, a partner organization of Rhodes University that specializes in giving students second chances. At first, he felt hesitant about the program.

GADRA turned out to be exactly what he needed. The small school blends academic rigor with the kind of support that prepares students for university life, mixing high school structure with college expectations.

"They treat you gently, but they also prepare you," Sinelizwi explained. "It's like a second home."

The transformation went deeper than academics. His entire mindset shifted from simply trying to pass to actually understanding how to learn and grow from mistakes.

Registration day at Rhodes brought clarity after months of uncertainty. The warm welcome from staff made him feel like they'd been waiting for him all along.

Sinelizwi's story shows what becomes possible when institutions see failure not as a final verdict but as a starting point for growth. His willingness to try again, combined with structured support, transformed a disappointing result into a launching pad.

Now pursuing a Bachelor of Social Sciences, he speaks openly about his dreams and the reality that success won't follow a straight line. "I see myself as a millionaire," he said with a laugh, still figuring out the path forward but confident he'll find it.
