Student Wins Spelling Bee, Becomes Lagos Governor for a Day

A spelling bee champion just got the coolest prize imaginable: running one of Africa's biggest cities for 24 hours.

Etiyemonu Esther, a student at Lagos State Senior Model College in Igbokuta, stepped into the governor's office on Monday after winning the 21st Lagos Spelling Bee Competition. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu handed over his seat at Lagos House, Marina, officially making her the One Day Governor.

Esther earned the title in December 2025 by outlasting every other student in the state at the annual spelling competition. Her reward went far beyond a trophy or scholarship check.

She arrived at the governor's office with her One Day Deputy Governor, Awoyemi Dorcas, and One Day Secretary to the State Government, Salami Jumai Olaide. Their parents joined them to watch their daughters experience government leadership firsthand.

Governor Sanwo-Olu praised Esther's achievement during the handover ceremony. "Her confidence, focus, and hard work stand out," he said. "She represents the very best of our youth, and I am incredibly proud of her achievements."

The One Day Governor program was created by Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. Since its launch, the initiative has given dozens of young students a glimpse into public service and leadership.

The Ripple Effect

The program does more than celebrate academic excellence. It introduces young Nigerians to civic responsibility and shows them that leadership positions are achievable with dedication and skill.

Lagos State, home to over 20 million people, faces complex challenges from traffic to housing to education. By letting students like Esther experience these realities firsthand, the program plants seeds for the next generation of problem solvers.

Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence in Esther's future during his remarks. "Esther, all of Lagos is rooting for you and your bright future," he told the young leader.

The spelling bee competition has become a major event in Lagos, drawing students from schools across the state each year. Winners don't just get recognition; they get real world experience that could shape their career paths forever.

For one day, a teenager who mastered words got to help shape policy for millions.
