Sundance Film Festival Seeks 2,000 Volunteers in Boulder

Imagine spending 11 days surrounded by filmmakers, artists, and movie lovers while helping bring one of the world's most prestigious film festivals to life. That's exactly what 2,000 volunteers will experience when Sundance comes to Boulder this January.

The Sundance Film Festival is now recruiting volunteers for its January 21-31 event, and the best part? You don't need any special skills or film industry experience to apply.

Harrison DeVoe, Sundance's administrator for volunteer resources, says volunteers are the backbone of the festival. Without their support, the event simply couldn't happen.

The roles span everything from ushering at theaters and scanning tickets to helping filmmakers navigate the festival and yes, even shoveling snow. Some volunteers assist with technology setup, while others run panels and events.

The Ripple Effect

What makes thousands of people return year after year isn't just the work. It's the community they build together.

"Many people come back year after year because of the community," DeVoe said. "It's a really passionate group of people who have a shared mission and love to see films and see how the films take life post-festival."

Last year's festival brought together volunteers from all 50 states and more than 21 countries. They come from every background imaginable: teachers, doctors, filmmakers, producers, and people who simply love movies. Some volunteers have been with Sundance since it started.

The perks make the time commitment worthwhile. Volunteers get access to film screenings and waitlist tickets based on their hours. The festival hosts volunteer-exclusive screenings and events, plus provides complimentary Sundance gear and meal vouchers for restaurants across Colorado.

The commitment varies by role. Full festival volunteers work roughly one shift daily throughout the event. Half festival volunteers complete six to eight shifts. The most flexible option requires 24 hours of service or four shifts, whichever comes first. Most shifts run six to eight hours.

Sundance prioritizes accepting returning volunteers, local Colorado residents, and people who already have lodging secured. While the festival provides hotel rooms for some volunteers in leadership roles, most out-of-state volunteers need to arrange their own housing.

Applications open August 31 at sundance.org/festivals/sundance-film-festival/volunteer. The process is competitive, with thousands applying for 2,000 spots each year. Applicants can share their experience and note which roles interest them most.
