SUNY Brockport Wins First-Ever Empire 8 Flag Football Title

History was made on a Friday night in Brockport, New York, as the Golden Eagles captured something no team had ever won before: the Empire 8's first women's flag football championship.

The No. 2-seeded SUNY Brockport squad faced a daunting challenge early, falling behind 12-0 to Elmira in the first quarter at Bob Boozer Field. But what happened next showcased the heart of a championship team.

Freshman Addy VanDeWater sparked the comeback with a momentum-shifting play in the second quarter, intercepting a pass and taking it to the end zone. From that moment, the Golden Eagles never looked back, clawing their way to a 13-12 halftime lead in front of their home crowd.

Tournament MVP Megan Gerber put on an absolute clinic in the championship game. The dual-threat quarterback rushed for 260 yards and a touchdown while passing for 127 yards and three more scores, totaling 387 yards of offense. Her scoring passes connected with VanDeWater, Caitlynn Haugh, and Trelani Harper, giving Brockport offensive firepower at every turn.

But Gerber's most memorable play came on defense. During a critical third-quarter two-point conversion attempt by Elmira, she intercepted the pass and returned it the length of the field for two points, swinging momentum firmly in Brockport's favor.

The Golden Eagles defense dominated throughout, forcing five interceptions total. Ava Leyh and VanDeWater each grabbed two picks, while Lauren Cundra added another. VanDeWater led the team with eight solo flag pulls, proving instrumental on both sides of the ball.
