The mobile screening program targets current and former smokers aged 55 to 74, bringing health checks directly to supermarket car parks across Teesside. No appointments at intimidating hospitals. No complicated referrals. Just park, walk over, and get screened.

Since launching in 2022, these unassuming mobile units have detected more than 360 lung cancers. The real game changer? A stunning 77% were caught at stage one or two, when treatment is most effective and survival rates soar.

The Ripple Effect

Dr. Jonathan Ferguson, clinical lead for the NHS lung cancer screening programme, has watched the transformation firsthand. When he started as a lung surgeon on Teesside, 80% of lung cancer patients received only palliative care because their cancers were discovered too late for cure.

Now those numbers have completely flipped. Today, 80% of patients screened through the program can receive curative treatment. That's not just an improvement. It's a revolution in cancer care delivered from parking lots.

Ferguson calls the screening "quick and completely painless" and has a message for anyone who receives an invitation letter: "It could be the most important letter that lands on your doorstep. It could be the letter that saves your life."

McCaffrey puts it even more bluntly: "It's a no brainer to go for the scan. If I didn't, I would be dead."

The program proves that lifesaving healthcare doesn't always need gleaming facilities and complex systems. Sometimes it just needs to meet people where they are, between grocery runs and everyday errands, turning ordinary parking lots into places where lives are saved.
