Supreme Court Backs Pregnancy Center in Free Speech Win

A small New Jersey nonprofit that helps thousands of women each year just secured a major legal victory that protects free speech rights for organizations across America.

First Choice Women's Resource Centers won a unanimous Supreme Court decision allowing them to sue state officials in federal court for alleged First Amendment violations. The center provides free pregnancy support services to women facing unplanned pregnancies.

The trouble started when New Jersey's former Attorney General Matthew Platkin opened an investigation into the organization despite admitting he had zero complaints against them. His office demanded private donor information including names, addresses, phone numbers and workplaces.

The center fought back with help from Alliance Defending Freedom, arguing these demands violated their constitutional rights to free speech and association. Lower courts initially dismissed their claims, but the Supreme Court just reversed that decision.

Over 40 years, First Choice has served more than 36,000 New Jersey women without charging a single fee. Executive Director Aimee Huber says the state's actions pulled resources away from their core mission of helping women.

The Ripple Effect

This ruling protects far more than one pregnancy center. Dozens of similar organizations in Washington, Vermont, Illinois and California have faced similar government pressure for their views.

The decision strengthens free speech protections for all kinds of nonprofits, from tech companies to immigrant advocacy groups. Any organization facing invasive demands from hostile officials can now seek accountability in federal court.

Pregnancy centers nationwide provided impressive support in 2024 alone: 600,000 free ultrasounds, 200,000 STD tests, 6.3 million diaper packs and 39,000 car seats. That adds up to more than $452 million worth of services for women who wanted help continuing their pregnancies.

First Choice can now return to focusing on what matters most: supporting women in their communities who need a helping hand.
