Surgeon Saves Olympian Lindsey Vonn's Leg After Crash

A quick-thinking surgeon prevented Olympic skiing champion Lindsey Vonn from losing her leg after a devastating crash at the Winter Olympics earlier this month.

The 41-year-old suffered a complex leg fracture during the Olympic downhill in Italy, but the impact triggered something far more dangerous. Compartment syndrome developed in her left leg, a condition where extreme pressure cuts off blood flow to muscles and nerves. Without treatment, it causes permanent damage or amputation.

Dr. Tom Hackett, an orthopedic surgeon working with Team USA, recognized the emergency immediately. He performed surgery to relieve the dangerous pressure, a procedure Vonn says saved her leg. "He filleted it open and let it breathe, and he saved me," she shared on Instagram.

The timing was remarkably fortunate. Hackett was only in Italy because he had been monitoring Vonn after she tore her ACL just before the Olympics. "If I hadn't done that, Tom wouldn't have been there and wouldn't have been able to save my leg," Vonn explained.

After nearly two weeks immobilized in an Italian hospital, Vonn finally moved to a hotel last week. She underwent multiple surgeries in Italy before flying back to the United States for continued treatment. She also broke her ankle in the crash and faces a lengthy recovery.

Despite everything, Vonn has zero regrets about her comeback. "I showed up and did what most thought was impossible at my age with a partial knee replacement," she wrote Sunday. "Every moment was amazing. Every moment was worth it."

She's now focused on recovery, grateful for the memories and the medical team that made her Olympic return possible.
