Sweden Breaks Ground on 189 MW Wind Farm With Battery Storage

Sweden is getting a powerful boost in clean energy as construction begins on a 189 megawatt wind farm that will keep the lights on for years to come.

Energy company OX2 broke ground on the Fageråsen wind farm, their first project in Sweden that they'll continue to own and operate after it's built. The company purchased the project in July 2025 and wasted no time getting shovels in the ground.

The wind farm will feature 27 massive turbines standing tall across the Swedish landscape. When the blades start turning in early 2028, they'll generate about 550 gigawatt hours of renewable electricity each year for Price Area SE3, a region hungry for new power capacity.

But here's where it gets even better. The project isn't just about catching wind. OX2 is planning to add a 200 megawatt hour battery storage system alongside the turbines, solving one of renewable energy's biggest challenges: storing power for when the wind isn't blowing.

"We begin the year by further strengthening our presence in the Swedish market," says Matthias Taft, CEO of OX2. The investment isn't just good business. It's filling a real need in an area that desperately needs more electricity capacity.

The Ripple Effect

This project signals something bigger happening across Europe. OX2 is shifting from just building renewable energy projects to becoming a long-term owner and operator, showing serious confidence in clean energy's future.

The move also demonstrates that renewable energy projects can attract major financing. DNB Carnegie and UniCredit provided long-term project financing, proving that banks see wind and solar as solid investments worth backing with serious money.

For Sweden's Price Area 3, this means more stable electricity supply and less dependence on fossil fuels. For Europe, it's another step toward energy independence and climate goals that once seemed impossibly far away.
