Sweden Data Center Switches to AI with 100% Hydro Power

A data center in northern Sweden just made a leap that combines environmental responsibility with technological progress.

HIVE Digital Technologies became the official owner of the Big Boden data center in June 2026, eight years after first setting up operations there. The facility runs on 32 megawatts of hydroelectric power from Sweden's abundant rivers, making it one of Europe's greenest computing sites.

The company plans to upgrade the center to handle sophisticated AI workloads instead of cryptocurrency mining. That means installing around 2,000 NVIDIA graphics processors designed for machine learning and artificial intelligence applications.

Northern Sweden offers a perfect storm of advantages for this kind of operation. The region has plentiful renewable hydroelectric power, naturally cool temperatures that reduce cooling costs, and stable infrastructure. HIVE has invested roughly $100 million in the Boden region over the years and contributed about $60 million in taxes.

The upcoming upgrades will bring the facility to Tier III standards, which guarantees 99.982% uptime. In practical terms, that means the center can undergo maintenance and repairs without ever going offline, a crucial requirement for businesses running continuous AI operations.

The Ripple Effect

This shift reflects a broader change happening across Europe. More companies and governments want computing power that doesn't depend entirely on American tech giants. By owning and operating facilities like Big Boden, European-based operations can offer an alternative that keeps data and computing resources closer to home.
